This book was exactly what I wanted. A few highlights:- great mix of material -- starts at the very beginning (1000 BC) but increases the amount of detail as we get closer to the present, providing a basic understanding of where Russia came from and a more detailed understanding of the Soviet Union, etc.
- very, very readable -- I was afraid this would be boring and textbook-like, but the narrative is really compelling. One aspect of this is that the author provides very definite opinions on Russian leadership -- this was well done rather than obnoxious, and helped to frame a cohesive story rather than just dumping facts.
- includes a nice timeline, which doubles as a summary/review
Minor complaints:
- 10 years old
- black-and-white (often rather unhelpful) pictures
- the maps kind of suck -- in particular, why is there no map in the geography section?!?
- everyone will complain that their pet topics got cut...in my case, I was disappointed to see nothing about the language, the cities (other than as part of the historical narrative), and to see only a rather limited discussion of modern Russia's status (e.g., compared to other world powers).

A Brief History of Russia Professor Michael Kort 9780816071128 Books Reviews
As I read this book, I wished that all history books were written like this straightforward, well-organized, just literary enough to be pleasant and engaging.
A few dozen centuries of Russian history, all within the span of 250 pages A remarkable achievement really. I was left with the impression that all the major incidents, movements, personalities, etc. were all covered in only as much detail as I really wanted. Yet he found time for a few paragraphs each on Tchaikowsky, Pushkin and Dostoyevsky, among others.
For anyone interested in learning what happened in that vast area from the days BCE through Putin, without getting too bogged down in the mud (!), this volume is excellent.
Highest marks.
I would recommend it to anyone.
I teach Russian history at a Community College and was looking for an alternative to a standard textbook (pretty dull) that was readable and relatively inclusive of important events/people. While not all of this book will be useful in my classes, it gives a broad look at Russian history, including important artists and thinkers, as well as the usual political and military suspects. Not too long that it will leave the reader dazed with facts. This beats the textbook and will give, I believe, enough information to connect the past with current Russian events, much of which is not comprehensible without some background. I would recommend this book to the general reader who may be concerned with what in the heck is with Russia today.
Kort did more than put things in chronological order, but explained "what, why, and how". Very good read. Recommend to anyone wanting a brief history.
A great beginners book for those interested in Russian History!
I read several trips on Russia to prepare for a trip there and this was the most beneficial. I recommend it highly for someone who is planning a similar trip.
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about this topic. Very clear to read, fast shipping.
Clear, concise, and easy to read. Perfect for a young adult working on a class project! It was very helpful to have on hand, rather than scouring the internet at every turn.
