They say you can’t tell a book by its cover, but the cover of mine, with its photo of a handsome, bare shouldered guy, definitely hinted at the contents.Genie-Alogy, by HB Morris, is an amalgam of odd parts that don’t totally cohere. The plot centers on a contest sponsored by a Professor Pyle, a Nobel-winning, billionaire eccentric who invites its three winners to his incredible estate. All three get some play, but one, Nathan Levy, seems the novel’s main character. He’s a care-free bloke with several girlfriends and a healthy libido.
The novel follows him for a while, then jumps to each of the other winners, then to Pyle, and his butler, and back to Levy, and so on.
One aspect of the book I liked was its libidinal aspect, at least from a male perspective – cute girls, fast and expensive sports cars, and Pyle’s amazing estate. There was something almost gratuitous about it, yet it worked for me. I was surprised to see on goodreads that HB Morris is female.
Genie-Alogy has a science fiction aspect which, being a sci fi fan, is what induced me to read it. I’m often able to suspend belief and swallow the author’s “plausible” explanation for stuff like faster-than-light travel, telepathy, or super AIs, but I had trouble with the time travel here. What was odd, though, was that the sci fi aspect seemed almost tangential to the rest of the story.
I found Genie-Alogy easy reading, somewhat whimsical, and entertaining. But there were a number of loose ends and episodes that didn’t really connect with the rest: by the end of the book, it didn’t.

Three people get to see 3 of their ancestors face to face. Like most wishes, they turn out to be more than expected.
The book is fairly short but the story is very entertaining.
