I have reviewed a number of cookbooks for the Vine programme. Some of the books have been cheap and a bit nasty in their quality of printing and photographs, others have had recipes that have been so brief that they cannot be followed or some that are so lavish that they cannot be easily made. There are a rare few that are beautifully printed, are clear in their instructions and when finished, are delicious to eat and I feel that this book ticks all of these boxes.
To be honest I did not expect anything less than perfection from a Roux cookbook and this book did not disappoint. The recipes on the whole are not complex to put together. All the ingredients are easily found and the instructions are very clear. The book itself is beautifully produced with wonderful full colour illustrations.
The only issue I have with the content of the book is that it seems the recipes have come from other Roux books and so each section is not comprehensive as it could be. This book is a compilation from other, more complex and comprehensive Roux books.
As a gift it is perfect, but I feel in certain chapters more recipes would be in order. This is a superb all round book, but if you are looking for a comprehensive "how to" type of reference book, buy Roux's more complex cookbooks.
Highly Recommended.
This book is wonderful but you do need help with the ingredient measurements. You also will need a scale. I would like to have an easy booklet on measurement exchange.
Not for beginners, but if you know how to cook, a valuable resource.
