I've read all the books, I love the characters, the setting, etc. and consider it to be one of my favorite series. With the said, we know what happened before! We know that Chane was turned into a vampire and then his head was cut off.
Also, we get constant reminders that Chane and Osha don't like each other. It felt like every time these two saw each other, they had to glare at one another. Similar is Leesil's dislike and distrust of Brotan.
I guess I'll warn for spoilers below since I sum up half the book in a couple sentences, but I don't think really gives anything away.
After these two points, we're left with the rest of the book. Not....much...happens. Get passage on a boat. Floating on a boat, no food to eat. Floating on a boat, we have a bad feeling about the captain. We've arrived! That sums up the majority of the plot for Magiere and company. Wynn's plot group is pretty interesting at least and the plot goes along pretty well here.
Overall this book is just filler to continue the series and I would really like the plot to move along a little bit instead of these small steps. It still reads pretty quickly like the others and I by no means hated it (despite my negative comments.) I'll still be looking forward to the next installment.

A Wind in the Night A Novel of the Noble Dead Barb Hendee JC Hendee 9780451465672 Books Reviews
However many books later I'm still enjoying the story. New characters and old meshed together change the dynamic of the story keeping it fresh. Looking forward to the next chapter in the lives of everyone.
When is the next book availabel ???
Good read and keeps all the group in the mix, even tho they are both on seperate quests.
The dynamics in each group are well described and one can feel the tension through the descriptions of what is going on and how they all feel about each other.
this book captures you from the beginning and it is like watching a movie in your head. I love Barbara and J.C. Hendee's work and have read the Noble dead books from the beginning. I recommend this book to all that are interested in a good read, one that captures you from beginning to end, and keeps you wanting more.
A wind in the Night brings back more of the style from the earlier novels by once again jumping from two sets of main characters and their stories without shortchanging either adventure by switching too early.
Other novels that employ this writing style including Robert Jordan's novels will sometimes switch scenes too early, just as you are getting interested in that characters plot line.
This had become a bit of a problem in the last Noble Dead novel as the Hendee's brought back Magiere, Leesil, and Chap to join Wynn and Chane which required switching between the groups stories, sometimes too quickly and too often.
With A Wind in the Night, the pacing was spot on, it never felt rushed and each section switched to the other groups adventures at just the right pace. It was nice to have all of the Noble Dead cast back together. Looking forward to the next novel!
Mrs. Hendee and her husband have created an excellent saga to follow. The characters are easy to invest in and the key component of this story that keeps me buying their books and waiting for the next, is what lies hidden. The ancient vague history, the secrets of the other races, tempting your interest and curiosity to find out more. If you like scifant' you will enjoy these stories.
Unfortunately, while I like this author, I hate what has happened to this series. The story is being told from too many points of view for me. I find it difficult to follow when each chapter is told from a different point of view than the last chapter. I'm not even sure how many characters are speaking in the book anymore. I read much of the series years ago but stopped and just recently picked up 2 books I hadn't read. Unfortunately, I find my opinion has not changed. I also don't like that many chapters seem to be nothing more than a re-hash of previous events. There are one or 2 pages at the beginning and end of the chapter with new information and the rest is remembering what happened in previous books. It's is so not the type of book I like that I couldn't even bring myself to finish the book. Which I find very sad as the first 2 or 3 books in this series are favorites of mine that I have re-read many times.
I'm a long-time fan of this series, but this was the last book, closing the saga. I was not disappointed with this book or any of the series that preceded it. It was fast-paced, tied all the loose ends together, and summed up the saga to my complete satisfaction. Most, but not all, of the main characters survived to live their lives after this last adventure together. All mysteries were brought to light, all the questions answered, all problems solved. There is quite a bit of heartache for those who have invested themselves in some of the characters, but in this book they do what we all do - live and die, leave their mark while life goes onward. What I was not ready for was to say good-bye after all these years. But endings happen. This was a good book and the end of a fantastic years-long ride for fans of the series.
