First I have to say this is outside of my normal reading, Dana has always been one of my all time favorite authors. When I decided to read this book I was unsure of what the outcome of a review would be. As I started to read I was still unsure, I just didn’t see me enjoying this book at all. It wasn’t long before Dana as only Dana can do pulled me in with her tales and spinning a wonderful compelling story that had be hooked. I find I just can’t wait to get my hands on book 2 which should be out later this month. You have healers that heal but have to be careful or they can die, guardians that guard important things, pleasure halls, warriors of the finest, tigers, hidden cities and so much more.

I found this story to be unique with a build up that held your attention as the author spun a wonderful tale of fear of the unknown, love that grew from that fear that will last a lifetime. Dana gives us a very heroine that gives so much of herself, a hero that has the patients of a saint. Dana gives us an outstanding fantasy that will stay with you even once you finish reading it.

Tera who is the healer has not come into her powers when she is taken into slavery. She really is nobody who nobody cares about. She is treated very badly by savage warlords and their cruel concubines until one man takes her with him on a wild ride of the beast. There she learns much and become her own person as ancient prophecies come to pass and she must take on a leading role to help their people can they win this war and lead their people to freedom?

Batumar is a feared warlord but once you come to know him you find he is a man of honor, caring and love for his people. He has had much pain in his past and hopes to lead his people to freedom. He is about to find out a few things that he might find hard to believe as the ancient prophecies come to pass. His love for Tera grows fast and easy he is a patient man and he can wait forever for the right women.

These two hero’s lead you on a spellbound journey as the author spins her tales of pain and hurt. Giving us a totally wonderful fantasy land that holds not only your attention but your heart with a wonderful romance that only Dana can deliver. If you haven’t read any of Dana’s books you really should, once you pick one up you will know why she gets 5 star reviews and is one of the top bestselling authors with her wonderful mind for spinning wonderful tales that grips you and does not let you go.

The title is a bit misleading, causing the reader to expect a romance with fantasy undertones. In fact, it is a fantasy with a romantic subplot. With the romantic tension resolved by the end of the book the only reason to continue to the sequel is to follow the main plotline saving the kingdom.

Writing Good. I didn't stumble over sentence structure or grammar errors. (there were a few typos but nothing that kept me from reading). The writing didn't grip me but it wasn't appalling. I thought the author did a good job of creating two different, well rounded cultures. The character development was well done, especially the relationship between the two main characters. Overall, very solid.

Language No profanity

Sex I could have done without the the descriptions of rape but maybe others won't mind. The author didn't dwell on it overlong but it was still uncomfortable for me. There is a a mildly described consensual sex later in the story as well. It's not graphic but I prefer to leave some things unsaid. I wouldn't find it appropriate for my teenage daughter.

Violence Yes, there is violence but I wouldn't call it graphic. The author focuses more on healing than killing and doesn't linger over disturbing images.
Yeah this was an ok book. It was very hard to get into because she is sold as a slave and I kept waiting for her to get raped like so many of the other slave women did. So I kind of read while cringing on the side just waiting for it (never happened, but I didn't need to have it happen to the other characters either). Yes the man she winds up with is very nice, but his character is never really fleshed out well, so when the depth of his attraction comes out I am kind of like "ok so that happened somewhere". Until that point I would have been fine if she had found another man for her HEA. But at the end of the story I was happy with it. I doubt it will be a re-read for me, and I won't move on to any other books that come along in this series. If you buy it I think you won't hate it, but it won't be your favorite.
